The series is designed to appeal equally to older children and to adults. It is most akin in this respect to the Earthsea books of Ursula Le Guin, although the way that magic infuses the real world is more reminiscent of Alan Garner, and the movement of the action between our world and Faërie harks all the way back to Lord Dunsany.
The novels can be read independently, but very much form a trilogy which traces the growth of Melody, the heroine, through a series of events and adventures, until she finally discovers the strange truth about who she is.
